Navigating Parking Rules & Road Closures on Calgary Marathon Weekend
With the upcoming 2024 Servus Calgary Marathon weekend on Sunday, May 26, 2024, our city is getting ready for an exciting event packed with runners, spectators and community spirit. Whether running the marathon, cheering from the sidelines, visiting, living nearby, passing through, or staying home, as a vehicle owner, you can help make the marathon weekend safe, successful, and enjoyable by being a Parking Safety Champion.
Knowing where not to park saves you time and money during the marathon weekend. Calgary Parking officers will be enforcing the parking bans while they are in effect. If your car is along the route, you will get a ticket and your vehicle might be short-towed.
Here are six tips on how to be a Parking Safety Champion during the marathon weekend:
- Watch for Signs: Look for parking ban signs at least 12 hours before the marathon starts to know where you can't park, and make sure you only park outside those areas.
- Move Your Car: Remember to move your car on Saturday night so it won't get towed. Starting early Sunday morning, some streets will be off-limits for parking.
- Use Calgary Parking lots and Parkades: If you want safe, convenient, and affordable parking near the marathon route, arrive at a nearby Calgary Parking lot or parkade before road closures start. Note that some of these facilities might be closed for the marathon from 6 a.m. to around 3 p.m., with no entries or exits.
- Be patient and follow officials' instructions: Calmly and patiently follow the directions provided by police officers and parking enforcement directing traffic, as they're there to keep everyone safe and manage traffic flow.
- Consider other ways to get around: Walking or using public transit could be more convenient if you're not driving. Check schedules and routes in advance to make getting around easier.
- Spread the word: Help your neighbours by reminding them how they can be Parking Safety Champions like you!
By following these six simple tips during the 60th annual Calgary Marathon, you can smoothly navigate getting around during the Marathon weekend and minimize any driving and parking inconveniences. Join our community of Parking Safety Champions this year and make a big difference during the marathon weekend by ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.
