Our Parking Safety & Compliance department is focused on promoting safe parking practices. They achieve this in many different ways, including:

Community outreach
Parking Safety & Compliance (PSC) Officers will attend community gatherings, schools or team up with the Calgary Police Service (CPS) to special events, like “Coffee with an Officer”, to educate the public on why safe parking is important, parking regulations, and common parking errors to avoid getting a ticket.

Festivals and Events
Particularly during the summer, our PSC Officers assist other municipal services during events like Canada Day, Stampede, and Globalfest. These events require streets to be cleared and parking restrictions monitored so that emergency vehicles can get through, ensuring public safety.

School patrol
Maintaining safe parking around schools, particularly during busy pick-up and drop-off times at elementary schools is a persistent issue. Our dedicated School Patrol team attends schools during these busy times to educate parents and guardians on safe parking practices for the safety of all children.

Enforcement
When parking regulations are not followed, PSC Officers do need to enforce them by issuing tickets in hopes that drivers will change their parking behaviour and contribute to a safer community for everyone.

Our Parking Safety and Compliance Officers can give tickets for parking offenses within Calgary city limits, as described in:
Enforcement involves:
- Responding to calls about illegally parked cars
- Patrolling high congestion areas and during busy times like rush hour, schools, or special events
- Automatic enforcement through photo enforcement vehicles with license plate recognition technology and ParkPlus system reports
- Photo enforcement and digitization of parking sessions and permits allows for an efficient process.
How photo enforcement works
- Photo enforcement vehicles regularly patrol parking areas. They capture time and location-stamped photos of parked vehicles.
- The ParkPlus system compares these photos to payment records to validate payments, and licence plate registration for membership parking, permits and contracts. It marks “potential violations” where it can’t find a match.
- A Bylaw Officer reviews the “potential violation” in detail.
- If the violation is confirmed, a parking ticket is printed and mailed with the photo evidence to the last known registered owner of the vehicle.
