Parking around Mosques during Ramadan
Parking regulations
Ramadan is a holy month for Muslims and is observed in fasting, prayers and community events. In Calgary, mosques see a spike in attendance from sunrise until nightly Isha prayers. This influx can result in parking difficulties for nearby private businesses and neighbourhoods.
Parking Safety & Compliance Officers have been authorized to enforce parking regulations described in the Calgary Traffic Bylaw, Calgary Parking Bylaw, the provincial Traffic Safety Act and Use of the Highway and Rules of the Road regulation.

Parking relaxations
- During the Month of Ramadan and the Celebration of Eid Al-Fitr, individual Mosques may have made arrangements with the City and the local community to allow for changes to the parking restrictions and increased traffic, particularly around the Calgary Islamic Centre and the Akram Jomaa Islamic Centre.
- Any changes or relaxations will be indicated by signage or the presence of the City of Calgary or Calgary Police Service staff.
- Relaxations not supported by signs or staff may still result in tickets being issued.
Guidelines when parking around Mosques during Ramadan
Whether arriving or leaving mosques after prayers this Ramadan, following the parking guidelines that Calgary Parking enforces helps to make sure safety, respect and neighbourly co-operation are prioritized – especially necessary at this time of year.
Plan ahead
Anticipate increased traffic during Ramadan evenings and allocate extra travel time to ensure timely arrival.

Follow all parking signs and safe traffic practices
Do not park in no-parking zones or on boulevards, as these areas must remain clear for safety and accessibility. Violating parking and traffic laws may result in fines or towing of improperly parked vehicles.

No parking in business lots or private properties
Parking near the mosque is a blessing, but it's equally important to be considerate of the neighbours and businesses around you. Please avoid parking in spaces designated for local businesses or on private property. Remember that our neighbours may have different schedules or needs.

Park in the designated parking areas
Whenever legally possible, please park on mosque premises or in approved public parking spots near the mosque to reduce street congestion.
Please note: Some mosques may have agreements with nearby facilities to park additional vehicles during Ramadan. Please seek more information about this from the Mosque you visit.

Take public transit
Carpooling or using public transit helps to reduce demand for on-street parking and supports environmental sustainability. Please visit Calgary Transit for more information on the transit options that are available.

Carpool if necessary
Whether with family or another member of your community, share a ride to reduce the number of vehicles needing to park – it helps maintain traffic flow, reducing congestion and blocked access.

The City of Calgary advocates for education, not enforcement, regarding parking. However, our Parking Safety & Compliance Officers will still be enforced when apparent parking violations are observed to protect public safety and community standards. Awareness of these regulations and following them helps avoid fines, tows and possible legal complications while creating an atmosphere of self-discipline and deep spiritual reflection.

Collaborate with us

The City continues to collaborate with Mosques and community leaders to address parking needs during the month of Ramadan. These include parking relaxations once applied for by the Mosques.
Make the most of Ramadan and have a safe, peaceful and blessed moments while embracing the true essence of community and respect.
