Supporting Marda Loop: A Temporary Parking Solution for a Thriving Community
As the Marda Loop Mainstreet Project progresses, the area has experienced significant changes, including a reduction in available parking. Recognizing the impact on local businesses and residents, The City of Calgary has introduced a temporary parking solution at Lot 86, located at 2039 34 Avenue S.W.
Why Lot 86 matters
Parking is a top concern for those living, working, and shopping in Marda Loop. While the ongoing construction is necessary for the long-term enhancement of the area, it has created challenges, particularly for local businesses that depend on consistent customer traffic. Lot 86, a 16-stall gravel lot accessible from 34 Avenue and the south alley, is here to help solve some of those challenges.
Designed for convenience
The first two hours of parking at Lot 86 are free, making it easier for shoppers and visitors to access the main shopping district without worrying about finding a spot to park. After the initial two hours, there is a $10 hourly charge, with a maximum of one free session within a 24-hour period. This structure encourages multiple short-term stays, bringing more traffic back into the area and supporting local businesses during this critical time.
Safety and reliability
In addition to its convenience, this temporary lot is designed with safety in mind. The lot is fenced and patrolled by Calgary Parking to ensure a secure environment for everyone.
A temporary but vital measure
While Lot 86 may not solve all parking issues, it plays a vital role in supporting the Marda Loop community during construction. It aims to provide a reliable and predictable place for shoppers and visitors to park. The lot will remain open until the end of construction in 2025, serving as a temporary business support measure. We hope this effort, though temporary, will provide much needed parking relief and encourage Calgarians to continue supporting the vibrant businesses that make Marda Loop special.
